What Is Car Key Programming?

Car key programming is the electronic side of a car key. Most vehicles built since the late 1990s have a transponder chip in the key that talks to the car's immobilizer, and if the car doesn't recognize the chip, it won't start. Remotes and smart keys also have to be paired with the vehicle before the lock, unlock and trunk buttons work. We program transponder keys, remote head keys, key fobs and push-to-start smart keys for most makes and models using professional programming equipment.

Why Is Car Key Programming Necessary?

A key that's cut perfectly but not programmed will open the door and still leave you unable to start the car. Programming is needed when you get a replacement key, add a spare, buy a used car with only one key or when a key suddenly stops being recognized. Getting it done by a mobile locksmith saves you the trip to the dealership and the wait that often comes with it.

What Is Required For Car Key Programming?

We need the vehicle on site, because programming happens through the car's own system. Have every key you want working on hand, including the ones you already use, since some cars erase old keys when a new one is added. Keep your ID and registration ready, and let us know the year, make and model ahead of time so we can bring the right key or fob. If your dashboard shows a security light or a key not detected message, mention that too.
